Good Friday 2020: All you need to know about Christian holiday

Good Friday 4^th april 2020, the Friday before Easter, the day on who Christians annually observe the commemoration of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. From the early days, the Christianity community, Good Friday was known as a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting, a characteristic that finds expression in the German word Karfreitag (“Sorrowful Friday”).

What is good Friday?

Based to the Bible, the son of God was beat, ordered to carry the cross on which he would be crucified and then put to death. It’s difficult to find what is “good” about it. Some information are suggest that the day is “good” in that it is holy, otherwise that the phrase is a corruption of “God’s Friday”.

Whatever, according to Fiona MacPherson, senior editor at the Oxford English Dictionary, the adjective traditionally “designates a day on which religious observance is held”. The OED states that is a “good” in this context refers for “a day or season suited as holy by the church”, hence the greeting “good tide” at Christmas or on Shrove Tuesday. In addition to Good Friday, there is also a less well-known Good Wednesday, known as the Wednesday before Easter.

How to celebrate good Friday at home?

• If you don’t have a crucifix on your hand, make a cross, suitable but very simple, about 40 centimeters long—for example, with two wooden sticks tied with string.
• If possible, the text of the great Good Friday Solemn Intercessions should be made available to each person present.
• The person who will lead the celebration should take to heart the responsibility of preparing their role well in advance.
• The Reading of the Passion is particularly beautiful. In order to do it justice, the readers should make an effort to read it slowly, in a loud voice and with clear diction. Ideally, each reader should prepare in advance their part of the reading.
• The roles should be assigned in advance.
• This celebration requires the presence of at least two three people.
• If you’re alone, it is better to simply read the readings and prayers of the Mass of the day in your missal and/or watch the Celebration of the Passion on television or internet.
